How to Measure a Room for Wall-to-Wall Carpet (Step by Step)

Wall to wall carpet in Dubai is priced per square metre — so one wrong measurement either leaves you short on installation day or pays for metres you never needed. It happens more often than you’d think: a tape read at eye level instead of floor level, a closet forgotten, a doorway skipped. The good news is that measuring a room is genuinely simple when you do it methodically.

This step-by-step guide shows you exactly how to measure a room for wall to wall carpet in Dubai — the tools, the method, odd-shaped rooms, and how much extra to allow. (And if you’d rather skip the tape measure entirely, Decent Star Furniture offers a free measurement service across Dubai — more on that at the end.)

1. The Tools You Will Need

You don’t need anything fancy. A metal tape measure is the main tool — 5 metres at minimum, though a 10-metre tape is much easier in larger villa rooms. Add a pen and paper (graph paper helps), a calculator or your phone, and a second pair of hands to hold the other end of the tape. A laser distance measurer is a nice upgrade: it’s fast and very accurate for big open spaces.

One caution: phone measuring apps are handy for rough estimates, but they drift — use a real tape measure for the final numbers you order against.

2. Step-by-Step: Measuring a Rectangular Room

Start by clearing as much of the room as you can so the tape runs straight. Measure the longest wall first, at skirting/floor level — not at eye level, because walls can bow inward or outward. Measure at two or three points along the same wall and note the largest number. Then measure the width the same way.

Write both measurements down in metres, then multiply: length × width = square metres. Round each measurement up to the nearest 10 cm before you multiply — carpet is cut from wide rolls, and rounding up is always the safe side.

Example: a room measuring 4.25 m × 3.60 m becomes 4.3 × 3.6 = 15.48 sqm — so you’d plan for roughly 16–17 sqm once the waste allowance is added (see step 4).

3. Measuring L-Shaped and Odd-Shaped Rooms

Most Dubai villas aren’t perfect rectangles, and that’s where people get stuck. The trick is to split the room into rectangles on paper: draw a rough plan, label each section A, B and C, measure each rectangle separately (length × width), then add the totals together.

Measure bay windows and alcoves as their own small rectangles. For curved walls, measure to the farthest point of the curve — carpet is trimmed to fit, and a carpet cut too short is the one mistake you can’t undo.

4. Doors, Closets and the Waste Allowance

Measure into every doorway: wall to wall carpet runs through the doorway to the middle of the closed door, not just to the frame. Include walk-in closets and wardrobes if they’ll be carpeted — measure each one separately and add them to your total.

Then add a waste allowance: 5% for a simple rectangular room, 10–15% for rooms with angles, columns or stairs. If your carpet has a pattern, allow extra for pattern-repeat alignment and tell your installer the pattern repeat size. For offices, carpet tiles can be a simpler alternative — a damaged tile can be replaced one by one without touching the rest of the floor.

5. Common Measurement Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring at eye level instead of floor level — walls slope, and skirting eats centimetres.
  • Forgetting door swings, closets and alcoves.
  • Mixing up feet and metres — Dubai carpet is priced per square metre, so stay in metres.
  • Measuring only once — always measure twice and keep the larger number.
  • Treating staircases like floors — stairs need their own method (tread plus riser per step).
